Among all of the Italian restaurants in the Boston area, Fox and the Knife stands out as a spot that takes heavy inspiration from traditional Italian cuisine and European cooking styles. This stands in contrast to many of the other Italian restaurants in the Boston area, which tend to serve Americanized versions of Italian cuisine. In particular, Fox and the Knife takes inspiration from the food of Northern Italy. While they do not advertise their gluten free options online, they are easily able to accommodate gluten free diners. Fox and the Knife has a separate gluten free menu that provides information on which items contain gluten, and which items may have been exposed to cross contamination. Coppa Enoteca

Coppa is a popular Italian restaurant in the South End that is popular among gluten free foodies and gluten eating foodies alike. Coppa is a small but nice restaurant with an intimate atmosphere and some absolutely fabulous food. While Coppa is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant, they do shut down their regular operations to host a dedicated gluten free night once per month. During their gluten free night, they serve gluten free versions of pretty much every item on their regular menu. They also add a few treats that are difficult to find gluten free versions of, such as garlic knots, to the menu specifically for gluten free night.

  • Gluten free status. Coppa is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant. That being said, they shut down their regular operations once per month to host a dedicated gluten free night. They scrub their kitchen surfaces from top to bottom and serve entirely gluten free food. We have only eaten there during their gluten free night, so we cannot speak much about the precautions that are taken during regular operations, but we feel extremely safe eating there during their gluten free night. They do not have a separate gluten free menu during their regular operations, but they do have gluten free dishes available.

  • Cuisine. Coppa serves traditional Italian cuisine.
  • Location. Coppa is located in the South End. It is fairly easy to get to via public transportation, but it is a little more difficult to get to if you are driving as parking is limited in the South End. We highly recommend parking at a T station and taking the subway in.
  • Atmosphere. While Coppa technically has a casual dress code, this is a nice spot that many people are excited to go to. That means that people tend to dress up before heading over. While Coppa is located in a fairly small space, the space is very thoughtfully laid out to create an intimate atmosphere.

In particular, many of their dishes take inspiration from Chinese and Taiwanese cuisine. Barcelona Wine Bar

Barcelona Wine Bar is a popular Spanish tapas restaurant that has a few locations in the Boston area. We are most familiar with the Brookline location, so most of our comments will pertain to that location. Barcelona Wine Bar is an upscale tapas spot with amazing food and even better drinks. They have a huge amount of seating for a restaurant in the Boston area. This includes a large outdoor seating area and a few internal dining rooms. That means that this is an excellent place to go to catch up with friends, especially if you anticipate having a large group. There are not many restaurants with food this good that are able to accommodate large parties.

The entire restaurant is beautifully decorated with unique accents, so this is a great spot for anyone who appreciates some nice ambiance. Brassica Kitchen

Brassica Kitchen is a cute restaurant in Jamaica Plain that is commonly cited as being one of the best restaurants in the Boston area. We would have to agree that they serve some of the absolute best food that we have had in the Boston area, if not the best. Before we continue on about how amazing the food at Brassica is, we will add a word of caution that gluten free options can be somewhat limited and that is why they are a little farther down our list. They have a relatively small menu and less than half of their menu can be made gluten free most of the time. That being said, the staff are extremely knowledgeable about cross contamination and can make food that is safe for those with celiac disease.

  • Gluten free status. Brassica Kitchen is not a dedicated gluten free facility. They do not have a labeled menu and less than half of the items on their menu can be made gluten free. That being said, their staff are extremely knowledgeable about celiac disease and cross contamination. Their servers and kitchen staff can provide you with a marked up menu that shows which items can be made gluten free and what substitutions need to be made (if applicable).
  • Other dietary restrictions. Brassica is generally accommodating of food allergies and dietary restrictions. A large portion of their menu is vegetarian friendly and they generally have vegan options available as well.
  • Cuisine. Brassica Kitchen is a New American restaurant that serves a range of different items that take inspiration from different types of cuisines. Many of the items on their menu take inspiration from traditional American comfort food, like their fried chicken and waffles or their biscuits and gravy. Other items take inspiration from various Latin American cuisines and Asian cuisines. Honestly, we are usually skeptical of restaurants that serve dishes that take inspiration from so many different types of cuisine because it is hard to be good at everything. But Brassica Kitchen is good at everything. Every dish we have ever had at Brassica was amazing.
  • Location. Brassica Kitchen is located in Jamaica Plain, right across the road from the Forest Hills T Station. That means that it is exceptionally easy to access via public transportation. That also means that there is a convenient parking lot located right across the street.
  • Atmosphere. Brassica Kitchen brands itself as a local neighborhood joint where everybody knows your name. That means that it is a little more on the casual side. If you are looking for a spot in the Boston area where you can get absolutely top notch food without having to dress up, then this is the number on spot that we would recommend. This is a cozy spot with extremely friendly and accommodating staff that make you feel right at home. We are not from anywhere near Jamaica Plain, but we always feel right at home at Brassica.
  • Seating. Brassica Kitchen primarily has indoor seating. This is an extremely popular spot that is also relatively small, so we recommend making reservations before heading over. It is generally possible to make brunch reservations a day or two ahead of time. Dinner reservations may need to be made a little farther ahead of time, especially if you plan to attend during peak weekend dinner hours.

Krasi

Krasi is a popular Back Bay restaurant that is adored by gluten free foodies and gluten eating foodies alike. In fact, it is so popular that their reservations for peak dinner hours book up almost two months ahead of time. Krasi is a well thought out Greek restaurant that has it all. The food is bold, flavorful, and all around delicious. The ambiance is perfectly curated to feel upbeat and swanky, but still special and intimate. They may just have the best balance between delicious food and amazing ambiance in all of the city. Krasi is a Greek restaurant that serves dishes that center around traditional Greek flavors and ingredients. That means that a large portion of their dishes do not center around gluten containing ingredients. Both their servers and their kitchen staff are knowledgeable about cross contamination and well equipped to handle gluten free diners.

  • Gluten free status. Krasi is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant. That being said, they are knowledgeable about cross contamination and are able to make a decent portion of their menu gluten free upon request. They do not generally have a full printed gluten free menu, but they do keep a few copies of their menu that are marked up to show what dishes are made without gluten ingredients (and what dishes can be made without any cross contamination) in the back. They can bring one of these menus out if you let them know that you have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity. Their servers and kitchen staff are both knowledgeable about the menu and the servers are sure to alert the chef about allergies and celiac disease.
  • Other dietary restrictions. As with many Greek restaurants, Krasi has a decent range of vegetarian options available. The vegetarian dishes are not marked on the menu, but they are generally easy to spot. There is a lot of dairy used in the vegetarian dishes, so it might not be as good of a spot for vegan diners.
  • Cuisine. Krasi is a Greek restaurant that serves elevated Greek cuisine. While many of their dishes center around traditional Greek flavors, they sometimes add less traditional ingredients that complement the other flavors in the dish. Krasi is known for serving seriously flavorful dishes with bold flavor profiles. Krasi is also known for their extensive collection of greek wines, so this is a great place to go with wine lovers.
  • Location. Krasi is conveniently located in one of the most popular shopping and dining areas in the Back Bay. It is located just steps away from the Prudential Center, so it is in a highly trafficked area that has a lot of attractions nearby.
  • Atmosphere. Krasi is another spot that has some seriously great ambiance. In fact this might be our second favorite restaurant in the city when it comes to ambiance, falling short only to Contessa. The entire restaurant is decorated with luxurious textures and interesting patterns and not a single detail is neglected. The music is carefully chosen to curate the mood they are looking for and the lighting is gradually adjusted as the night goes on. Krasi strikes a careful balance between feeling like a swanky, upbeat spot that is fun and exciting to eat at and a special, intimate spot that is the perfect venue to celebrate a special occasion with a loved one.
  • Seating. Krasi only has indoor seating available. This is a popular place that books up far in advance, so we recommend making reservations soon after they open. Their reservations tend to open up about 60 days out, so that means that you may need to plan ahead. It is often possible to get reservations at off times, such as after 9pm on a weekday a few weeks ahead of time. If you are looking to eat during the main dinner rush, you will need to make reservations farther in advance.

Kava Neo-Taverna

Kava is a trendy restaurant in the South End that is known for having some of the best Greek food in the city. This is a seriously popular spot with a small space, but they only open up reservations about a day ahead of time so this is not a place where you need to make reservations weeks in advance. If you are looking for a top notch restaurant where you can get a last minute reservation with ease, this is one of your best options. Kava is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant, but around two thirds of the menu is gluten free or can easily be made gluten free by omitting bread that comes on the side. There are also many vegetarian options on the menu, so this is an excellent place to go if you have both vegetarians and people with celiac disease in your party.

  • Gluten free status. Kava is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant. That being said, around two thirds of the menu is gluten free or can easily be made gluten free by omitting bread that comes on the side. That means that there are a large range of choices for those who maintain a gluten free diet. Their menu does not label what items are gluten free and what items are not, but their servers can mark up a menu to show you what items are or can be made gluten free. They have a fairly safe menu that does not have menu items with hidden gluten that you would not anticipate. Their staff are fairly knowledgeable about celiac disease and understand common sources of cross contamination.
  • Other dietary restrictions. Kava has a large selection of vegetarian options. This is a seriously great place to take a friend who maintains a vegetarian diet.
  • Cuisine. Kava is a Greek restaurant that serves fairly traditional Greek dishes. There are some dishes on the menu that take some inspiration from other mediterranean cuisines, but most of their dishes stay loyal to traditional mediterranean flavors and ingredients.
  • Location. Kava is located in the South End on a popular street that is lined with lots of other shops and restaurants. There are multiple other upscale restaurants nearby that offer safe gluten free options, such as Myers and Chang, Coppa, and Elephant Walk. We will warn that this is a congested area that does not have much parking available. It is generally much easier to walk, Uber, or take public transit than it is to drive over and find parking.
  • Atmosphere. While the space that Kava is located in is small, the owners of the restaurant make great use of what space they do have. The restaurant is decorated with sleek, compact furniture that does not take up a lot of floor space. The restaurant is adorned with light colors and lots of bright lighting fixtures that produce a light and airy feel. The large windows that line the walls also contribute to the light, airy feel. This is a relatively nice spot with a fun, trendy environment.
  • Seating. Kava primarily has indoor seating available. They have a small space that does not have room for many tables and they are a popular restaurant that is known for serving delicious food. That means that it is best to make a reservation before heading over. They only open up reservations a day or two ahead of time, so reservations do not need to be made far in advance but we usually make a reservation the night before we plan to head over.

Capo Restaurant & Supper Club

Capo Restaurant & Supper Club is another restaurant that scrubs their kitchens from top to bottom and hosts a dedicated gluten free night periodically. Specifically, Capo hosts a dedicated gluten free night every Tuesday. This is a fairly popular Italian spot with an extensive menu, most of which can be prepared gluten free on their dedicated gluten free night. As with most restaurants that have large, extensive menus – some of the dishes that they prepare are better than others. That being said, we generally have luck when we opt for dishes that are recommended by the staff or are mentioned in reviews! They have a huge menu and the vast majority of it can be made gluten free on their gluten free night, so this is another great option for people who like to have a lot of choice.

  • Gluten free status. Capo is not a dedicated gluten free facility. That being said, they have a dedicated gluten free night once a week where they scrub their kitchens down and prepare a menu that is entirely gluten free (baring one or two items that are kept in a separate area). We have only gone to their restaurant on the dedicated gluten free nights, so we can not attest to the allergy protocols that are taken on other days, but we feel very comfortable eating there on gluten free nights.
  • Other dietary restrictions. Capo also has a range of vegetarian options available.
  • Cuisine. Capo is an Italian restaurant with a menu that focusses largely on Italian American cuisine. They have a large menu that consists of pizzas, pastas, risottos, meat dishes, and a large variety of hot and cold appetizers. As with most restaurants that have such large menus, some items are better than others and we recommend ordering popular dishes that have been recommended by others.
  • Location. Capo is located in South Boston. It is a little more out of the way than some of the other restaurants that we frequent in the South End and parking can be a little tricky.
  • Atmosphere. Capo has a large space with a warm, inviting atmosphere. They have two main dining rooms that have slightly different feels to them. When you first enter the restaurant, you walk into a large industrial space with high ceilings and exposed brick walls. There are many rustic touches that prevent the space from feeling too bare. If you walk towards the back of the restaurant, you will see a sedan dining room with a large fireplace and more luxurious decorations. This second dining area is designed to feel more cozy and homey than the other dining area. We love eating in the back near the fireplace!
  • Seating. Capo primarily has indoor seating available. They have a large space with a lot of seating available, but their gluten free nights are very popular so we recommend making a reservation at least a few days in advance. We can’t speak to how competitive reservations are on other days because we have only gone there for gluten free night.

Uni

Uni is an upscale sushi restaurant that is known for being one of the best restaurants in the city. They have some seriously delicious food that people are willing to pay a lot of money for. Uni has a medium-sized space that is conveniently located right where the Fenway neighborhood meets the Back Bay. That means that it is easy to get to from many different areas of the city and public transit is readily available. Uni has attentive and accommodating staff that are very knowledgeable about celiac disease and other food allergies. The level of service here is seriously impressive.

  • Gluten free status. Uni is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant. That being said, they are extremely well informed about food allergies and are particularly knowledgeable about celiac disease. It is seriously impressive how well they handle people with celiac disease. While they serve tapas-style food that is brought over by different staff members as it comes out, those staff members always make sure to note what allergies each dish is and is not safe for. They do not have a dedicated gluten free restaurant, but their servers and kitchen staff are extremely knowledgeable about what is or can be made gluten free.
  • Other dietary restrictions. Uni can accommodate a range of allergies and dietary restrictions, but they are particularly well known for their ability to accommodate those with celiac disease. They are very accommodating overall and we have seen them do things like make special vegetarian sushi rolls for vegetarian diners.
  • Cuisine. Uni is a Japanese restaurant that primarily serves sushi and sashimi.
  • Location. Uni is conveniently located right where the Back Bay meets Fenway. That means that you can easily walk to it from either neighborhood. There is a reasonable amount of parking available nearby, though that parking may be on the expensive side. There are also ample public transportation options available.
  • Atmosphere. Uni is an upscale spot with a seriously nice atmosphere. It is known for being one of the nicest places in the city, both in terms of atmosphere and food quality.
  • Seating. Uni primarily has indoor seating available, though there have been times where they have had outdoor seating available. This is one of the most popular restaurants in the city, so you will want to make reservations before heading over. We generally make reservations a few weeks ahead of time.

Bencotto

Bencotto is another popular North End restaurant that serves delicious gluten free Italian food. The food that is served at Bencotto is relatively similar to the food that is served at Benevento’s. That being said, Bencotto has a slightly different vibe than Benevento’s. While Benevento’s has fairly typical North End decor, Bencotto is decorated with the type of sleek, modern decor that is more popular in other parts of the city. While the decor is undeniably nice, it does not have that classic North End vibe. The nice thing about Bencotto is that they have lovely floor to ceiling windows that can be opened on nice days. That means that this is a great spot to go on sunny days with warm weather.

  • Gluten free status. Bencotto is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant. That being said, the staff do take precautions to avoid cross contamination. The menu is labeled with some information on what kind of dishes can be made gluten free. If the information on the menu does not answer all of your questions, the waitstaff are also very helpful.
  • Other dietary restrictions. There are also many vegetarian options available at Bencotto. The vegetarian options are not marked on the menu, but they are generally pretty easy to identify.
  • Cuisine. Like most other North End restaurants, Bencotto primarily serves Italian cuisine.
  • Location. Bencotto is located in Boston’s North End.
  • Atmosphere. Bencotto has a nice atmosphere that is relatively similar to that of most North End restaurants. The staff are very attentive and the atmosphere is very inviting overall.
  • Seating. Bencotto primarily has indoor seating available. That being said, the restaurant opens their windows on warm days to create an indoor-outdoor dining experience. Bencotto has more seating available than Benevento’s, so it may be a better option if you want to eat with a large party. That being said, seating is a little more competitive overall. We recommend making a reservation a few days in advance if you plan on showing up during peak dinner hours. They sometimes have room for walk-ins, but the wait can be long.

Benevento’s

Benevento’s is an Italian restaurant that is located in Boston’s North End. Of all of the restaurants we mention in this article, this may be the spot that we visit most often. We love to eat here with friends and family who want to explore the North End. While Benevento’s is located near some of the most popular attractions in the North End, it is set back away from the Main Street that cuts through the center of the downtown area. It is also a relatively small restaurant, so it has a cozy and laid back vibe. We think of it as a little oasis where we can go to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. But as we said before, the hustle and bustle is conveniently located right around the corner when you are ready to get back to the excitement.

  • Gluten free status. Bevenento’s is not a dedicated gluten free facility. That being said, many of the items on their menu can be made gluten free upon request. Items that can be made gluten free are marked on the menu. They take precautions to prevent cross-contamination in their kitchen and we have never had a negative reaction there, despite going many times. That being said, the kitchen space is relatively small so they are not able to put as much distance between items that contain gluten and gluten free items as some other restaurants.
  • Other dietary restrictions. There are also a variety of vegetarian options available at Benevento’s. Vegetarian options are not marked on the menu, but they are relatively easy to identify.
  • Cuisine. Like most of the restaurants that are located in Boston’s North End neighborhood, the menu at Benevento’s has a strong focus on Italian food.
  • Location. Benevento’s is located in Boston’s North End near many historic sites and landmarks.
  • Atmosphere. The atmosphere at Benevento’s is nice, but it is a little more laid back than some of the other restaurants in the North End. That means that it is a great spot if you are looking for a low key spot to grab a meal in the bustling North End. Like most North End restaurants, the atmosphere and the staff are warm and inviting.
  • Seating. Before the pandemic, there was only indoor seating available at Benevento’s. Since the pandemic, there has been some outdoor seating set up as well. That being said, outdoor seating is limited. Since Benevento’s is a little bit off of the main strip, seating is not generally as competitive as it is at some other North End restaurants. We still recommend making reservations if you plan to go during peak dinner hours, but you may be able to make reservations the day of or a few days before. Many restaurants in this area require reservations to be made up to two weeks ahead of time, so this is a nice option if you are not planning as far in advance.

Nebo Cuicina & Enoteca

Nebo is a modern Italian restaurant that has an extensive gluten free menu with a wide range of gluten free food, drink, and dessert options. Nebo is centrally located right between the main downtown area and the Seaport, so it is convenient to get to from many different areas of the city. While we would not say that Nebo has the best gluten free Italian food in the city, it has one of the largest and most varied gluten free menus of any Italian restaurant around. In fact, it has one of the largest gluten free menus we have seen at any restaurant in the Boston area. That means that it is an excellent choice for people who like to have a lot of options to choose from.

  • Gluten free status. Nebo is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant. That being said, they have a dedicated kitchen space that is only used for gluten free food, as well as a dedicated gluten free fryer. They often designate a specific oven that is only used for gluten free pizzas as well. That means that the risk of cross contamination is relatively low compared to other Italian restaurants. Nebo has a gluten free menu that makes it explicitly clear what can and cannot be made gluten free.
  • Other dietary restrictions. There are also a wide range of vegetarian options that are available at Nebo. The options are not clearly marked on the menu, but it is generally fairly easy to identify what is and is not vegetarian.
  • Cuisine. Like many popular restaurants in the Boston area, Nebo serves Italian cuisine.
  • Location. Nebo is located South of Faneuil Hall just across the bridge from the Seaport. That means that it is a great place to grab a meal after a long day exploring the Seaport. Nebo is also a short walk from the Boston Commons.
  • Atmosphere. Nebo has a nice, upscale atmosphere that makes it a great place to celebrate a special occasion or to take a date that you are trying to impress.
  • Seating. There is only indoor seating available at Nebo. This is a popular spot and the seating tends to fill up fast. We recommend making reservations at least a week or two in advance if you plan to go during peak weekend dinner hours.

Shanti

Shanti is a delicious Indian restaurant that is known for having some of the better Indian food in the Boston area. Shanti is located in the southern portion of Boston in the neighborhood of Roslindale, which is an area that does not have as many gluten free options. It is located right near the heart of downtown Roslindale in the Roslindale village, so it is a lifesaver if you are ever looking or a place to grab a meal before attending an event in Roslindale.

  • Gluten free status. Shanti is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant. That being said, their menu is clearly labeled to show which items contain gluten and which items do not. Other than their bread and samosas, the vast majority of the items on their menu are naturally gluten free. There have been times where their servers have sounded nervous when we expressed that we had gluten allergies and were sensitive to cross contamination, which has made us nervous. That being said, we have eaten there multiple times and have never had a bad reaction.
  • Other dietary restrictions. Shanti is also accommodating to other common food allergies and dietary restrictions. There are many vegetarian and vegan items that are clearly labeled on their menu. A large portion of their menu is or can be made vegetarian friendly. They also label items that contain other common allergens like nuts.
  • Cuisine. Shanti is an Indian restaurant that serves fairly traditional Indian food.
  • Atmosphere. Shanti is a fairly casual restaurant that has a laid back atmosphere.
  • Location. We are most familiar with the Roslindale location, which is located right in the heart of the Roslindale village. There is generally some street parking available near the restaurant and there are also plenty of public transportation options. Shanti also has a location in Dorchester, but we are not as familiar with that location.
  • Seating. There is only indoor seating available at Shanti. It is generally possible to get a seat without making a reservation. That being said, this is a relatively small place so it may be a good idea to make a reservation if there is a large event happening nearby or it is a popular day for dining out.

El Pelon Taqueria

El Pelon Taqueria is a Mexican spot that is located just a few blocks away from Fenway Park. It is located a little bit outside of the main downtown area in Fenway on a side street that has a few other shops and restaurants on it. That means that it does not always get as crowded when major events are happening at Fenway Park. El Pelon Taqueria is a relatively casual spot that primarily has outdoor seating. It is a fun place to go to enjoy a meal when the weather is warm and sunny.

  • Gluten free status. El Pelon Taqueria is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant. That being said, a large portion of their menu is or can be made gluten free. Some of their dishes are made with flour tortillas, but other than that there are not many ingredients that contain gluten used in their kitchen. They generally have a dedicated gluten free fryer available that they use to fry their chips. Other gluten free restaurants in Boston

In this section, we will mention a few additional restaurants that we did not cover above. These are restaurants that we have enjoyed, but are not as familiar with as we have only been to them once or twice. While we may not be as familiar with them, they are still great options that we highly approve of.

La Familia Georgio’s

La Familia Georgio’s is another very popular restaurant in the North End that serves Italian food. The food there is both delicious and safe for gluten free foodies. That being said, we do not go there as often because seating is competitive and reservations need to be made far in advance. They recommend making reservations two weeks ahead of time.

Poke by Love Art

Poke by Love Art is another great spot to grab a gluten free meal on the go! This is a casual poke spot that has a kitchen that is 100% gluten free. That means that you can grab a quick meal without having to worry about any cross contamination. They are also conveniently located just steps away from North Station and the TD Garden.
