Ingredients

  • 1 lb Brussels sprouts
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • vegetable oil

Sweet and spicy sauce

  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients for the sweet and spicy sauce in a small bowl and mix well.
  • Pour 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of vegetable oil into the pan you will use to cook your Brussels sprouts. Preheat the pan over medium low to medium heat.
To avoid splatter, we recommend preheating the pan over medium low heat then increasing the heat if necessary after you add the Brussels sprouts.
  • Chop the Brussels sprouts. Cut the larger Brussels sprouts into quarters and chop the smaller Brussels sprouts in half.
If you recently cleaned the Brussels sprouts, make sure they are thoroughly dry. This will also help to prevent splatter.
  • Dump the Brussels sprouts in the pan and cook them for 10 - 15 minutes, or until the Brussels sprouts brown on both sides. Flip the Brussels sprouts every 4 - 5 minutes to prevent them from burning.
If it has been 4 - 5 minutes and your Brussels sprouts have not started to brown on the bottom, you may need to increase the heat on your pan.
  • Remove the Brussels sprouts from the pan and pat them with a paper towel to remove excess oil. Toss the Brussels sprouts in salt.
  • Mix the sweet and spicy sauce again then toss the Brussels sprouts in the sweet and spicy sauce.

Notes

  • Quantity of sweet and spicy sauce. This recipe produces enough sauce to lightly coat the Brussels sprouts in sauce. If you want your Brussels sprouts to be extra saucy, you can increase the measurements for the ingredients of the sweet and spicy sauce by 50%.
