Servings: 4 sandwiches
- 8 slices gluten free bread
- 2 cups smoked gouda (shredded)
- 1/4 cup cream cheese
- 1 honeycrisp apple
- butter (salted or unsalted)
- salt (coarse or flaky)
Slice the apple into thin slices.
Preheat a non-stick griddle or pan over medium low to medium heat. Coat the pan with butter then toast one side of each slice of bread for 2 - 5 minutes or until the bread develops a nice golden brown color. The exact amount of time you need to cook your sandwich will vary depending on the exact temperature of your stove and the type of pan you are using, so you are best off using visual cues and waiting for your bread to develop a nice golden brown color on the bottom. Assemble the grilled cheese sandwiches by putting the smoked gouda, cream cheese, and apple slices on the toasted side of the bread. Add another slice of bread on top with the toasted side facing the toppings. When you are done, the outsides of your grilled cheese sandwiches should be untoasted. Toast the grilled cheese sandwiches on both sides until both sides are a nice golden brown color and the cheese has melted.
Sprinkle some salt on the outsides of the bread.
Cheese not melting? Is your cheese not melting by the time the outsides of your grilled cheese have reached a nice golden brown color? That means that you are cooking your grilled cheese at too high of a temperature. Try lowering your heat to low and letting the sandwich cook just a little bit more so that the cheese has time to melt. You can also pop your sandwich in the oven at 350 for a few minutes. What to pair this sandwich with. This smoked gouda sandwich is creamy and decadent so it pairs well with sides that have a little acidity to them such as tomato soup.
