The Misfit

It is no secret that The Misfit is one of our favorite spots in Santa Monica. The Misfit is a swanky bar and restaurant with an intricately decorated bar area that resembles a luxurious library in a lavish mansion. The ambiance at this place is amazing, though we will warn that the music can get loud. This is one of the most popular restaurants in all of Santa Monica, and for good reason! Whether you are looking for delicious upscale food or creative cocktail creations, The Misfit serves some of the best tasting items in the city. Its central location right next to the Santa Monica Pier also makes it very popular with tourists and locals alike.

  • Gluten free status. The Misfit is not a dedicated gluten free facility. That being said, many dishes on the menu are gluten free or can be made gluten free. Gluten free items used to be labeled on the menu, but this is no longer the case. Chulita

Chulita is a cute Mexican restaurant that is conveniently located right in the heart of Venice. Even though Chulita is located a little bit inland from the beach, the atmosphere at Chulita is perfectly curated to make you feel like you are eating right on the beach on a tropical island. While both the ambiance and the menu are perfectly curated, our favorite thing about Chulita is that it is about as close as it gets to being a dedicated gluten free facility without actually being one. While they technically do keep flour tortillas in their kitchen for their burrito, there are no other gluten-containing ingredients used in their kitchen.

  • Gluten free status. Chulita is not a dedicated gluten free restaurant because there is one item on the menu that can be made with flour tortillas (namely their burrito). That being said, almost everything on the entire menu is gluten free and there are very few gluten-containing ingredients used in their kitchen. This is an extremely safe place for those who are sensitive to cross contamination because the vast majority of the menu is naturally gluten free and the staff are also knowledgeable about cross contamination and celiac disease. Items that contain gluten are not labeled on the menu, but the staff are knowledgeable and can provide information on which item(s) do contain gluten.
  • Other dietary restrictions. Chulita also has a large range of vegetarian options available. Out of all of the Mexican restaurants we have been to in the Los Angeles area, this is probably the spot that offered the most vegetarian-friendly options.
  • Cuisine. Chulita is a Mexican restaurant that serves Mexican-inspired cuisine. We would say that while they primarily make use of traditional Mexican ingredients, they do add in some nontraditional ingredients to put a unique twist on their dishes.
  • Location. Chulita is located in Venice in a fairly central location that is within walking distance of the beach, boardwalk, canals, and the main shopping areas. We find the location really convenient because we can stop there on the way from one attraction to another.
  • Atmosphere. Chulita is a cute restaurant that has a unique beachy vibe that makes it feel right at home in Venice. The dining area is decorated with light, airy furniture and accents that make reference to the beach. This is the perfect place to go if you want to feel like you are eating on a tropical island, without having to deal with all the sand and commotion of the beach. The walls of the dining area open up to create an indoor-outdoor dining experience on sunny days, which only enhances the beachy vibe.
  • Seating. Chulita has a mixture of indoor and outdoor seating available, but most of their seating is actually indoor-outdoor seating as the indoor seating area is kept open to the outdoors whenever the weather is nice. While it is generally possible to get in at Chulita without a reservation during brunch or weekday dinners, we do recommend making a reservation if you plan to attend during a weekend dinner. This is especially true if you plan to attend during peak dinner hours. It is generally sufficient to make a reservation a few days in advance as they do not book up that far out.

  • Atmosphere. Rosti Tuscan kitchen has a more laid back atmosphere than some of the other restaurants discussed in this article. The atmosphere is very warm and inviting, but it is not as high energy. This is a good place to go for a relaxing night out with friends and family.
  • Seating. Most of the seating at Rosti Tuscan Kitchen is indoors, but there are some tables set up outside. The restaurant is somewhat small and seating is relatively limited, so we recommend making a reservation if you are going during a popular time.

Ingo’s Tasty Diner is an upscale diner that is owned by the same company that owns The Misfit. Just like The Misfit, Ingo’s Tasty Diner is a trendy bar and restaurant with amazing food and even better cocktails. They also have a fun, lively atmosphere that is really popular with the younger crowd. Truthfully, Ingo’s Tasty Diner is probably our favorite spot in all of Santa Monica.
